Last weekend (19 & 20 June) was the culmination of Sport England’s This Girl Can week-long campaign, and it coincided with the GB Maxis Women training camp at the University of Brighton Sport Centre. The featured picture is the GB Maxis Women’s S&C Coach, Alex Reid of Perform:Fitness leading the squad warm up at the start of the training camp. We also took the opportunity to hear from one of GB Maxibasketball programme coordinators (Sadie Mason) about how the programme began, and how it has evolved and grown into the elite performance programme it is today – for both women and men. You can listen to our interview with Sadie here
For the women, the focus is on retaining former high level players in the game either as players or coaches, acting as role models and champions to inspire females to keep playing. It was fantastic to see so many Basketball England players, who were formerly active at national league and international level at last weekend’s camp, joined by players from Basketball Wales (Ruth Thomas) and basketballscotland (Shirley White, Clare Duddy, Kirsty Semple-Barr). These mums, daughters, sisters and aunties are flexing GB Maxis training around their family and work commitments, but trust us…they still got game and GB Maxibasketball has given them the motivation to show it!
So, we are absolutely saying This Maxibasketball Girl Can! And we are reaching out to any ex-national and international female ballers living in the United Kingdom, or British players living overseas to come and join us. We would love to see you back in the game and reppin’ Great Britain against elite players of your era, as part of this inspirational national programme. GB Maxibasketball is preparing 35+, 40+, 45+ and 50/55+ teams to compete for medals in the European Championships 2022 (Malaga) and the World Championships 2023 (NBA Bubble, Orlando). It’s the same deal for the men, but don’t be in their shadow …bring your boots and bring your game!
