GB Maxibasketball is delighted to share news of its final teams that will head to Pesaro in June for the European Maxibasketball Championship 2024.
115 players attended the final selection weekend at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena, and as with our women’s teams, the coaches have selected squads to compete in the 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+ and 55+ categories for Pesaro, doubling the number of teams that took part in last year’s World Championships in Argentina. With only 12 spaces per team up for grabs, it was very competitive to say the least. Programme Lead and Mens 40+ Head Coach, Jesse Sazant, was pleased with the calibre of players that attended, and said:
“I’m so excited to be sending 10 GB Maxibasketball teams to Pesaro this year. The growth of the programme has meant some incredibly difficult decisions were needed to select these teams. The strength in depth of our squads will be a real asset for us. The work the staff are putting in, supported phenomenally by the University of Greenwich partnership, is continuing to raise the bar in our preparation for Pesaro”
Programme Director, Sadie Mason MBE, put her playing shoes to one side and attended the men’s selection camp from an organizational perspective. Paying tribute to the staff, she said:
“ I remain very appreciative of the voluntary cast of coaches, managers and sports science & medicine professionals for their generous commitment of their time and expertise to the players, which in turn continues to consolidate the performance ethos of this national programme. Supported by ‘The Cast’, over the next five months the squads will be focusing on their tactical, physical and mental readiness for Pesaro. I’m really excited for Pesaro, and look forward to seeing our teams reap the rewards for their hard work. Yep, I’ll be wearing my “positive glasses” as a well-known coach would say!
As you will see from the short reel, the squads include some established personnel that represented Great Britain at the European Championship 2022 (Spain) and most recently the World Championship 2023 (Argentina). They will be alongside some of the new and upcoming ‘junior’ masters players, some of whom are still active in their respective national leagues or are former BBL players. Check them out here ….
