After two comprehensive training and selection weekends for the men’s players and coaches, GB Maxibasketball is delighted to confirm the appointment of the coaches that will prepare and lead Team GB Mens squads who will be heading to the FIMBA European Maxibasketball championships in Malaga next year.

Starting with the Men’s 35+ category, Liam Jefferson is confirmed as the Head Coach alongside Brian Deacon who is named as Assistant Coach. On hearing news of his appointment, Liam said:

“I am extremely grateful to be appointed Head Coach for the Team GB Maxibasketball 35+ team. Across the programme we’re building some very talented, high-character teams that make it such an exciting time to be involved.  I’m looking forward to the opportunity to lead the 35+ age group into the FIMBA European Championships next summer and firmly believe we can compete with some of the best across the continent.”

Moving on to the Men’s 45+ squad, we are pleased to announce that former BBL coach Danny Byrne has been confirmed as the GB Maxibasketball Mens 45+ Head Coach, assisted by Tom Griffiths and developing young coach Kieran Howell.  Danny is a man of few words, but was happy to share his brief thoughts on his appointment:

“ [I am] delighted to be selected to be named Head Coach of the 45+ squad. Looking forward to put a competitive squad together to represent the programme at the highest level and medal at next years Europeans in Malaga”

We continue with news that Richard Parker, from Birmingham, has been appointed to lead the GB Maxibasketball Mens 50+ squad. A very popular choice with the players of his era, Richard will be assisted by experienced Italian coach Riccardo Raggi and Kings Basketball Club principal coach Karl Buitendam.  Coach Parker will take the 50+ helm at the next performance camp in August, working Riccardo and Karl, both of whom bring complementary skills and experience to the group. He said:

“It is an honour to be selected as the GB Maxibasketball 50+ Head Coach. To represent my country is the pinnacle of my career. I look forward to working with the whole team, coaches, physio’s, Team managers, admin staff and players to build a legacy which GB Maxibasketball can build upon.”

Finally, GB Maxibasketball men’s programme lead  Jesse Sazant is confirmed as Head Coach for the Men’s 40+ squad for Malaga 2022, and he will be assisted by London-based coach Mike Martin.

Jesse Sazant spoke about his confirmed role, saying:

“ I am incredibly proud of how the GB Maxibasketball programme continues to grow in all areas. Head Coaches Richard (50+), Danny (45+) and Liam (35+) all bring a wide variety of experiences to the role and have been excellent at our trial camps so far. And personally, the opportunity to lead the 40+ team is something I am very excited to do. There is a great core to the team already building towards final trials. They are a great group of guys and can’t wait to see how far we can go.”

That’s all the coaching news for now! Congratulations and good luck to Jesse, Mike and all the GB Maxis’ men’s coaches who have been appointed for the FIMBA European Maxibasketball Championships 2022.
