The squads are strengthened by a plethora of quality former U18 – u25 internationals and national league level players. Coach Lee said:
“As a recognised national performance programme, we are tasked with identifying, selecting and preparing some of the most experienced former elite level players in their age category to challenge for medals in Malaga. Between April and December, monthly open selection opportunities were provided in the north and south of the country, with players travelling from Scotland, Wales and even the USA to attend. I have been impressed with the calibre of players and staff that have joined the programme, and I am confident that we have selected four well-supported and exciting teams that demonstrate the necessary qualities to meet the challenge. I am looking forward to our final preparations in the new year, and to seeing these players proudly representing Great Britain at the European Championships 2022.”
Maxibasketball is a world-wide movement, and its’ popularity is rising year on year particuarly across Europe. With many multi-national players living in the UK for 12 months or more (a quaifying criteria), GB Maxis have been able to widen the selection pool to include them alongside some of the strongest and most experienced British nationals in England, Scotland, Wales and even from the USA. Performance, diversity and age inclusion are the hallmarks of the GB Maxibasketball programme, and these teams reflect these values.
The programme could not run as it it does without the endorsement and support of our home nation NGBs Basketball England, basketballscotland Basketball Wales, and that of our volunteer coaches, managers and performance support team, and our corporate partners. Therefore a huge THANK YOU goes out to them alongside this announcement. You can view the women’s team selection video reels on our Facebook page here (or by following the links below) We wish them all the very best out in Malaga next year.
