GB Maxibasketball opened the 2022/23 season yesterday with a one-day summer taster training camp for women at the NBPC Manchester. It was great to welcome and introduce lots of new players to the programme, as well as players returning after this years European Championships 2022, in Malaga.
Although national rail strikes prevented a few players and staff from arriving, the 33 players and 8 coaching staff plus new physio were welcomed by one of our programme leads Coach Jesse Sazant (stepping in for Coach CJ Lee). Good to see cross programme collaboration, with GB Maxis Mens Coach Richard Parker also supporting the Womens camp. Anyway, a great camp followed: the morning session allowing players to ease back into activity after a summer break, and the afternoon flew by with scrimmage games.
Today, it was the the turn of first men’s open training session of the season. We were pleased to welcome just over 50 players onto the court, and 12-strong volunteer staff team again led by men’s programme lead Jesse Sazant. A special welcome and shout out to new staff members AKIL ROBINSON (S&C), CONNOR FLYNN (Physio), CONOR MCDONALD (Graduate Physio) who provided the SSEM support in camp, and new Coach MARK POYNTON. As with the women’s opener yesterday, it was a great opportunity for new players to hear more about the purpose of the GB Maxis performance programme, and to try the training sessions out for themselves. A good mix of players attended , including a clutch of players travelling from Scotland and Wales. As ever, the afternoon scrimmages were competitive, and a chance to put on the floor what had been practiced in the morning session.
Next up are our September training weekends in Nottingham (dates are on our website), and we look forward to welcoming back those players and staff that were unable to make the season openers due to holiday. Will be fun
