31 May – 2 June 2024 was undoubtedly a historical and successful weekend of international basketball for our GB Maxibasketball players and staff at home and in Europe. Firstly, it saw Scotland Men and England Women winning the first ever Tri-Nations 35+ Masters Tournament at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester.
What a great showcase for masters players that was and, being the first of its kind, GB Maxibasketball has now laid the foundation for future years and we will continue to build on this in collaboration with our national governing bodies. It was great to see more masters players from Scotland, Wales and England representing their country alongside the youngest generation of U14 international ballers.
Meanwhile, competing the same weekend in Spain, GB Maxibasketball M40+, W55+ and M45+ teams won GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE trophies respectively at the Santander Masters Basketball Tournament in Spain against some tough European opposition. Great preparation for the forthcoming European Championship in Italy in just 16 days time.
The weekend’s successes has raised huge interest in masters basketball. So, GB Maxibasketball is now inviting expressions of interest from players and staff from all home nations who wish to find out more about how to join the GB Maxibasketball programme, and are interested in selection to Great Britain teams for the 17th World Maxibasketball Championship 2025, taking place from 27 June to 6 July 2025 in Ticino, Switzerland. There are open weekend training sessions at the Nottingham Wildcats Arena on:
14 & 15 September 2024 (Women)
21 & 22 September 2024 (Men)
12 & 13 October 2024 (Men)
26 & 27 October 2024 (Women)
We are seeking to bring together the masters community in a bid to ensure the strongest cohort of players are selected from a widest talent pool available in England, Scotland, Wales and GBR players based overseas. Coaches and SSEM staff have the opportunity for development and mentoring in a performance environment, and as a national performance programme, we would expect players to be motivated by:
(a) the opportunity to be selected as one of the best in their UK peer group
(b) the opportunity to compete internationally against the best in their World peer group
(c) the chance to proudly represent Great Britain in a collective bid for Championship success.
Player eligibility for the World Maxibasketball Championship tournament is as follows:
(a) GBR National, or
(b) GBR Dual National, or
(c) Resident in the UK for 12 months or longer
If you’re up for that challenge, please register your interest as early as possible via the online registration form, or email us info@gbmaxibasketball.co.uk for further information. Places at these camps are limited and registration for the September camps will close on 31 August 2024. Age categories will be from 35+ to 60+, male and female players. Let’s get Great Britain on the road to Ticino 2025!
