GB Maxibasketball was the most successful British programme at Ticino 2025. The overall performance of its seven teams was the culmination of a great season of preparation that began in January 2025, with players committed to their mental and physical preparation, plus individual and team play work over the course of 17 training camps. This resulted in:
– Two World Championship medals
– Four quarter-finalist teams (top 8 in the world)
– Four top 10 world championship teams
– Five teams ranked in the world’s top 16
The final game of the FIMBA World Championships in Ticino, Switzerland saw GB Maxis M35’s secure a statement win against the hosts Switzerland 102-74 for a top 3 finish on the biggest stage and go home with a bronze medal. Meanwhile our F35+ squad fought valiantly against a tall, strong and rangy Germany squad, and claimed the 4th place world championship medal the day before.
There were some standout performances from all teams and we are incredibly proud of their medal winning performances and all round achievements, which included a thrilling GB M55 win 65-64 over Argentina A, and our GB M45 win over Costa Rica 64-61 in the dying seconds of their game. There was also a gutsy fourth quarter performance by our GB W45s who came back from a 17 point deficit against Mexico A to claim a world championship 9th place. There is an honourable mention for our GB M50 team who played the World Championship 2023 gold medalists, Brazil A, only losing that game by one point. Ah…and of course, the 40-point drop by bronze medal winner GB M35 MVP Aaron Moseley!
Thanks must undoubtedly go to our dedicated band of voluntary coaches, team managers, SSEM, media support, friends and families for enabling our players to achieve these performances – we couldn’t do it without you, so we celebrate you also. We would like to thank our corporate partners Joma, Sporting Touch, Sterosport, Nottingham Wildcats Arena and staff, and The Village Hotel (Nottingham) for their ongoing support for the GB Maxibasketball performance programme.
Finally, thanks to FIMBA Ticino 2025 and FIMBA Switzerland for hosting this event in their beautiful country.
