The penultimate GB Maxibasketball women’s training weekend has finished, and what a successful one it was too. Day 1 of camp began in style with the presentation of GB jerseys to our new staff and players. Congratulations go to Ruby Clarke (35+), Leanne Cross (45+), Dr. Elton Chawatama, and Coach Brian Deacon (50+).
A special award went to Jez King, Duty Manager, (pictured below with F45+ player Emma Parslow) at Nottingham Wildcats Arena who has worked tirelessly to support the programme since 2023. Thank you
Alongside Dr. Elton Chawatama and Dr. Mark Dayson, Gail White (sports therapist) and Michelle Ortega, (S&C coach), we were pleased to welcome two medical students from the University of Nottingham as part of the clinical team who helped with the baseline concussion protocols required ahead of FIMBA Ticino 2025.

With all squads getting a couple of preparation games played, it was great to see the growth of the teams on court and off the court in education and clinical testing sessions. The camp concluded with an exciting match up between our GB Maxis 45+ and GB Maxis 50+: with 8 seconds to go, the 50+ squad were 3 points down. Head Coach David Mason called a time out, drew up a plan and advanced the ball. The 50s executed the plan with Louise Cooke’s 3-point attempt drawing a foul. She duly sank all three shots from the charity-strip to tie the game with 1.8 seconds to go. The 45s had the final shot attempt but couldn’t get a good look at basket as the clock (and our court hire) expired! The game ended 45-45.
As ever, huge thanks goes to all our staff for their dedication to the program, and in the meantime, it’s the turn of the GB Maxis Men who will be meeting up next weekend for their penultimate preparation camp.
