The GB Maxibasketball men’s training weekend was a remarkable one, as we celebrated the award of 22 new GB caps earlier today in a presentation ceremony that culminated in an impromptu rendition of the national anthem by players and staff. The buzz and excitement around the camp was palpable as GB Maxis Men’s Programme Lead, Jesse Sazant expressed his thoughts:
“It’s always an honour to be selected as one of the best to represent your country, and today’s presentation of GB caps is testament to the hard work and determination to make that grade. It’s a reflection of the dedication to performance shown by all involved in bringing us to this point. You are all to be congratulated.”
There was also a special moment, led by M50+ Coach Mark Poynton, to remember the late Keith Kelly RIP (#13) whose number has been retired from the M50+ category following his passing last year, and in whose honour we have named the Spirit of GB Maxis award. We know he would be encouraging every single one of us to give our best out in Ticino.
So, congratulations go to the following players and staff who will be representing GB Maxibasketball for the first time at FIMBA Ticino 2025 in just under seven weeks.
M35+: Nick Wookey, Leome Francis, Billy Smith, Aaron Moseley, Will Reid, Mark Rangeley, Chris Bigley, Chris Michaelides, Leon Thompson
M45+: Sasha Laryn, Stephen White, Julian Keeling
M50+: Donald Sampley, Steve Riley
M55+: Steve Milham, Stephen Johnson, Michael Anderson, Paul Chantler, Phil Rose
Staff: Emilie Fairnington (M35+ Asst. Coach), Nick O’Leary (M50+ Asst. Coach), Ally Sinclair (M55+ Asst. Coach), Rolandas Mizgueris (Osteopath)
As with the women’s presentation last weekend, we extend our thanks to all our staff team of coaches, SSEM, Team Managers and programme leads for dedicating time to make this national performance programme what it is.
Day 2 continued with preparation games for all squads plus concussion protocols and education sessions. All in all a very successful camp.
All teams will reconvene for a final camp in June, but before then the F35+, F50+ and M50+ will be away at preparation events in Cardiff, Santander and Dublin respectively. Good luck all!
